Your Moving Checklist – Get Ready for Your Move!
8 Weeks Before the Move
- Create a binder or a folder dedicated to your move. It can be a digital folder or a traditional binder. It should hold all your documents related to moving.
- Research moving companies, moving supply venders, and DIY moving trucks to determine your best option.
- Declutter! Start going through your things to decide what you need to keep. Donate items that you no longer need. Just go through one room at a time.
6 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Schedule donation pick-ups for large items. You may choose to have a garage sale if you’d like to make a little extra money. Then have a charity pick up anything that doesn’t sell.
- Choose a moving company, then book their services. Make sure you understand their fees and what services you are willing to pay more for.
- Purchase moving and packing supplies you know you’ll need.
- If you choose the DIY route, purchase moving insurance.
- Get your new home’s measurements. You’ll want to make sure your furniture will fit in the new spaces.
- Gather all your medical and school records.
4 Weeks Before Your Move
- Hire your full-service moving company. Make sure to keep a copy of your estimate and moving contract in your moving folder/binder.
- If you opt for DIY moving, start asking friends and family for help.
- Cancel club memberships, subscriptions, and newspapers.
- Have your vehicles serviced to make sure it’s in good running condition for the drive to your new home. If you plan to transport your vehicle, schedule the move.
- Make any other travel arrangements needed prior to the move.
- Begin packing. Be sure to label all your boxes so they’ll be easier to sort once you get to your destination. Start with pacing your less essential items.
2 Weeks Before Moving
- Check in with all your vendors. Make sure the moving company, storage unit, and real estate agent are all still on track.
- Now you can start packing more diligently. Begin with the stuff you don’t need daily such as your home décor, fine China, some of your kitchen supplies and clothes.
- Contact the utility companies at both locations to establish new services in your new residence and schedule to disconnect them at your old place.
- Start trying to use up food so you won’t need to take it with you.
- If you live in an apartment, make any arrangements needed or required. You may need to reserve the elevator or purchase a permit to park the moving truck on the street.
1 Week Before the Big Move
- Finish packing. Reserve just a few boxes for your last-minute items like toiletries, clothes, and medications. You can label these boxes, so you’ll know they contain your daily essentials. Each family member can pack a suitcase or duffle bag with their necessities.
- If you didn’t hire professional movers, begin disassembling large furniture.
- Clean your home or hire a professional cleaning company to clean for you.
- Gather up all the house keys, garage door openers, and mailbox keys for the new owner.
- Schedule a final walkthrough with your real estate agent.
- If you will be moving the refrigerator, defrost the freezer.
- Pack all your important documents.
- File your change of address with the post office
It’s Moving Day!
- Double check with your movers to ensure they have the correct address to your new residence. Make sure they have contact numbers in case they need to reach you.
- Make sure the moving company gives you an inventory list before the move.
- Take on final walk through your home to make sure nothing was left behind or forgotten.
