How to Pack Your Most Fragile Items
Moving is a difficult task and it’s easy to become impatient with the process. But hurrying can often cause breakages that don’t have to happen. If you’ve ever broken a beautiful vase or family heirloom, you are familiar with how sick it makes you feel. These types of moving strategies can be prevented with enough preparation and the right tools. You can pack your delicate and fragile items so they will be protected and safe for the move.
Prepare in Advance
You’ll need to invest some time to pack your porcelain items, valuable crystal, and other breakables. You do not want to rush. If you are packing them yourself instead of hiring movers, start long before moving day so you’ll have plenty of time to pack them properly. You will also have time to choose if you want to send them in the moving truck or take them in your private vehicle.

Gather the Right Tools
You will need a few common items to help you pack your fragile items.
HERE’S A LIST OF WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- High-quality moving boxes of different sizes
- Packing paper
- Bubble wrap
- Packing Peanuts
- Pliable pieces of cardboard
- Scissors
Packing tape
You’ll also need a table large enough to lay out all your tools and items. For some of your larger fragile items, you might need another person who can assist.
Label the Boxes for Moving
Use a marker to label boxes as “fragile.” This label helps movers know to be careful when transporting the boxes. Labels help you too as you begin to unpack and organize at your new house. It’s important to let movers know which boxes contain fragile items. There are specialized moving boxes available for packing items like mirrors, picture frames, and dishes.
Research Packing Techniques
Make a list of the items you’ll be packing. Then, choose how you will pack them properly. All fragile items are not the same and most require different packing strategies. For example, your grandmother’s fine china and your TV are both fragile items. Each of them needs to be packed differently. Do some research on how to pack fragile items, then plan in advance. Knowing what you are packing helps you gather enough resources like bubble wrap to ensure all your items are packed ahead of moving day.
Choose Packing Materials Wisely
You may be tempted like many people to use newspapers, paper towels, blankets, or old towels to wrap fragile items. There are better choices. Newspaper can be dirty and cost you time washing your fragile items after you’ve moved. Paper towels are not strong enough or reliable. Old towels slip too easily and you cannot secure them using packing tape. Take time to invest in the proper tools and you will not be sorry.
