5 Tips for Making Your Move Less Stressful
Moving is usually a stressful experience no matter how far you move. Some people are able to handle it better than others, but there are usually some moving jitters and anxieties. Here are five tips for you to help make moving less stressful.
Plan, Plan, Plan
Throwing things together last minute can increase your anxiety levels greatly. Staying organized can help you avoid stress but that means you’ll need to do plenty of planning in advance. It’s a good idea to give yourself at least a month for the process. Start by making a list of the tasks that need to be completed before, during, and after the move. Having a proposed timeline will help you stay organized and reduce your stress level by knowing you are ahead of schedule. If you do finish some tasks early, you’ll just end up with some extra time on your hands.

Control The Things You Can Control
Only worrying about controlling the controllable things in your life is a good stress-reducer for everyday life. But it works great for a big move too. There may be some things you cannot control like damaged items, helpers who show up later than planned, or other events. Instead of stressing about the things that you don’t have control over, just accept them and focus on the things you can control. You can make sure you have handled the utility companies, your change of address, and other items on your checklist.
Schedule a Break or Two
Scheduling some breaks while moving is just as important as packing and moving. When you give yourself time for breaks you will be better able to focus on your schedule without burning out. Of course, you may want to just power through the entire moving process, but it can be costly when it comes to mistakes. Take quick breaks for lunch, take care of your personal hygiene needs, and know when to call it a day. Just these three tips help make the process easier physically and mentally.
Learn to Enjoy Downsizing
You don’t have to wait until spring for spring cleaning! Moving is a great time to remove items you haven’t used or even seen in years. For many people, getting rid of unused items is therapeutic. Others may have difficulty throwing things out.
IF YOU HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME DOWNSIZING, TRY THESE TIPS TO MAKE IT EASIER:
-
- Donate slightly used items like furniture to a local thrift store or charity.
- Turn some items into money by selling them. There are several useful apps or marketplace options on social platforms. If you have time, have a garage sale to exchange items for cash!
- Remind yourself if you are moving to a smaller residence, that you’ll have less clutter and that can be more calming once you’ve moved.
Hire Progessional Movers
You may think a DIY move is a good way to save money. But if you damage a hallway, elevator or doorway, you may have to pay for it. Hiring a professional mover can be a lifesaver. It can save you a lot of time and effort to let the pros handle it. They can handle as much of the process as you are comfortable with. It will save you a lot of stress knowing someone who knows what they are doing is getting all your stuff moved for you. You don’t have to lift a finger if you don’t want to.
