There are a lot of reasons that people need to relocate. Sometimes, they move because of their work, to be in a better school district for their kids, or to be closer to family. Whatever the reason for moving, it will take some time to get settled into the new place. Where do you even start? Here is a list of 6 things that you need to do right after you move.
Unpack Your Essentials
What do you begin to unpack first? You’re sitting in your new place looking at all the moving boxes full of your family’s belongings. Ideally, you packed a personal bag for each person with basic care items like deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrush, pjs, and a change of clothes. Where you begin unpacking will depend on what is most important to you and keeping your home running smoothly. You may want to start in the kitchen. But if you work remotely, setting up your home office may be a priority shortly after a move. Start with your most pressing needs and habits.
Take Photographs
Why would you take photos of your bare walls right after a move? It’s super important, especially if you are renting your new place. These images can be crucial when it’s time to get your security deposit back. But taking photos is also important if you bought a new hone. It may have been some time since the inspector and the previous owner have been around. If there was any damage in the interim, it’ll be documented. This is important for instance, if a previously pristine floor was scratched when the former occupants moved out, or a window is broken that was not broken when you last saw the place.
Find the Water Shutoff and Electrical Panel
It’s important to know where the main water shutoff is as well as the single shutoff valves are if there is a plumbing emergency. Knowing where the electrical panel can be valuable during an emergency too. If you have a furnace or gas and oil supplies, know how to safely turn them off or who to call should an emergency arise. If there is a leak or a fuse blows, you’ll now how to shut everything off so you can prevent damage.
Find Where the Trash Goes
As you start to unpack, you’re going to have a lot of trash, including packing materials and boxes. There may be a recycling center or drop off location near you where you can take the moving boxes to be recycled. There will be other trash too, so find out where it goes and how often pickup day comes around.
Change the Door Locks
It is your home now, but there is no way of knowing who else has had keys to the doors. You don’t want even the slightest question about safety in your new home. Go ahead and swap out the locks on all your doors with access to the outdoors.
Check Your Belongings for Breakages
If you hired professional movers to pack and move all your things, you may have a limited time to report any damaged or missing items. Double check everything, including large appliances to ensure nothing was damaged in the move. If something was damaged during the move, review your contract to determine liability coverage.
